Talking to women with MS

It’s hard to know what to say or how to say it when a loved one has MS. These tips may give you more confidence to talk openly.

How should I talk to someone with MS?

Treat them the same as you always have

It’s most likely that your loved one will not want to be treated any differently because they have MS.

Encourage them to talk about their symptoms

Even though they might not want to talk about them, keeping symptoms to themselves can put them at risk of not fully addressing their MS.

Talk about each other’s feelings

It’s important that you and your loved one with MS are clear about how you’re coping so you can help each other.

Give them time and space

Your loved one may not be ready to talk straight away, so look for clues or ask them to tell you when they’re ready.

Don’t talk. Listen

Sometimes you don’t have to say anything at all. Silences may feel awkward, but it gives people a chance to say what’s on their mind. It can be frustrating not being able to solve someone’s problems immediately but a friendly ear may be all that’s needed.
